Countdown to Hannukah Fun

Countdown to Hanukkah Fun with the kids at the BE Religious School!   hannuka1

The children have been learning about the Hanukkah story, holiday songs, and creating beautiful decorations to decorate our shul, in time for our Hanukkah party!

We have some really talented kid chefs! The kids were given all the tools, ingredients and recipes to make two traditional Hanukkah foods: latkes & sufganiot.

Morah Anat shared one of her family’s special recipes. The sufganiot (Israeli donuts) were delicious!

Ingredients:
4 cups of flour
2 1/4 cups of milk (a little warm, not hot)
2 eggs
1 1/5 Tbl. sugar
peel of 1/5 lemon
2 1/2 tsp. yeast
1 tsp. vodka (we didn’t use this with the BERSers)

Directions:
1. Place flour in a large mixing bowl and create a hole in the center of the flour.
2. Pour in the sugar, yeast, and half the milk ( 1 1/8 c.)
3. Mix, then cover the bowl and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.
4. Add about 3/4 c. of milk, lemon, and vodka (optional), mix gently.
5. Once the dough thickens, add the left over milk. Sometimes you may need to add a little extra milk depending on the flour.
6. Cover the bowl with a plastic bag and kitchen towel for about 1 hour.

Cook:
Heat oil in a frying pan. Place 1 tbs. portions of the dough into the oil and fry until done.

You can inject the sufganiot with jelly and dust with powdered sugar, if you would like.

Bon Appetit!

***These are delicious!!

A big todah to Iris Daniel for teaching while Morah Liat is in Israel. The children loved the Hanukkah songs Morah Iris sang with them!

FYI: Every week we take lots of photos. Many are taken by our little photographers at BE. The kids are taking turns capturing our religious school mornings to share. Last week’s photographers were: Sean, Marina, Sarah, Sophia, Iris and myself!

Have a fantastic week!

Veterans, Menorahs and Latkes

Veterans, menorahs and latkes, oh my! photo 2

Last Sunday Beth El was packed!

The BE Religious School kids had a fantastic, Hanukkah themed morning, while the Jewish War Veterans of Austin enjoyed a festive holiday luncheon.

The children made creative menorahs. They were given a variety of materials and each made a unique hanukkiah to share with their family. (A couple were left at BE – so if your child came home without one, let us know.)

Cantor Ben-Moshe, Morah Anat and I led a fun Hanukkah sing-a-long, and chat. It was extra special because many of the Veterans joined us.

Morah Bev, Iris Koeller, Morah Iris and the kids made delicious latkes and sufganiot.

A big thank you to the parents who stayed to help and join in on the super busy morning.

We wish everyone a Happy Hanukkah and terrific winter break!
Beth El Religious School will resume on January 8th!

I hope to see you at the Hanukkah party this Sunday!

Birthright Israel talk to Sunday school

It was SO nice to have our Beth El Religious School kiddos back last Sunday.  Aviv talk

We hope all our BERS families enjoyed Thanksgiving!

The morning was filled with learning and fun.

Kitah Alef, Morah Anat’s class created an amazing hanukkiah. Each child wrote a prayer they wished for their family on a candle. They also spent the morning learning about the Parashat, singing songs and working on their Hebrew skills.

Morah Lital’s class worked on their Hebrew skills. She taught them some new Hanukkah songs and commented on how impressed she was with the songs they already knew.

Morah Bev’s class practiced the Friday night prayers and read about the history of the Hasmonean Period.

Vania and Marina worked on a new portion of the BERS Torah project. They created a picture of the story of Rivka and Eliezer at the well.

We also had Aviv, Morah Lital’s husband, come talk about Israel Birthright trips. He showed some great pictures of the fun things they did on the trips he led as a soldier in the Israeli Navy. Aviv also talked about working for the Minister of Minority affairs. During that time, he helped create some important laws that helped Israel’s religious minorities. He did a wonderful job explaining the Israeli system and even had a selfie of him in the prime minister’s office. Judith gave the children each a piece of pottery from an archeological dig that is 2000 years old and from the time of the Maccabees!

Another fabulous Sunday at BERS!!

See you next Sunday!

L’Shalom,

Shereen Ben-Moshe

Sunday school
YASHER KOACH to all the great kids and teachers on a fantastic first day of Hebrew School today! The children delighted in seeing all their friends and welcomed some new smiling faces to the classes. I had the pleasure of substituting for Morah Enat in Kitah Alef. Our morning centered on getting to know each other, writing our names in Hebrew, and creating a mitzvah tree. We read a PJ Library favorite, “Michael Says No!” and then created a list of classroom rules to help the class run smoothly. In Kitah Bet, our new teacher, Morah Lital reviewed the Hebrew alphabet with her class, practiced some writing, and made beautiful necklaces. Meanwhile, Kitah Gimel spent an hour with Morah Bev discussing Jewish history, and then an hour with Hazzan Ben-Moshe in the sanctuary reviewing some prayers. In the future this group will be working on strengthening their Hebrew reading and writing skills.
A fun, meaningful morning was had by all!
Remember, there will be no class next Sunday, in observance of Labor Day. The teachers look forward to seeing all the students on Sunday, September 11, as each class begins to learn about and prepare for Rosh Hashanah.
We wish all our cuties a terrific WEEK #2 in school this coming week!
L’Shalom,
