Countdown to Hannukah Fun

Countdown to Hanukkah Fun with the kids at the BE Religious School!   hannuka1

The children have been learning about the Hanukkah story, holiday songs, and creating beautiful decorations to decorate our shul, in time for our Hanukkah party!

We have some really talented kid chefs! The kids were given all the tools, ingredients and recipes to make two traditional Hanukkah foods: latkes & sufganiot.

Morah Anat shared one of her family’s special recipes. The sufganiot (Israeli donuts) were delicious!

Ingredients:
4 cups of flour
2 1/4 cups of milk (a little warm, not hot)
2 eggs
1 1/5 Tbl. sugar
peel of 1/5 lemon
2 1/2 tsp. yeast
1 tsp. vodka (we didn’t use this with the BERSers)

Directions:
1. Place flour in a large mixing bowl and create a hole in the center of the flour.
2. Pour in the sugar, yeast, and half the milk ( 1 1/8 c.)
3. Mix, then cover the bowl and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.
4. Add about 3/4 c. of milk, lemon, and vodka (optional), mix gently.
5. Once the dough thickens, add the left over milk. Sometimes you may need to add a little extra milk depending on the flour.
6. Cover the bowl with a plastic bag and kitchen towel for about 1 hour.

Cook:
Heat oil in a frying pan. Place 1 tbs. portions of the dough into the oil and fry until done.

You can inject the sufganiot with jelly and dust with powdered sugar, if you would like.

Bon Appetit!

***These are delicious!!

A big todah to Iris Daniel for teaching while Morah Liat is in Israel. The children loved the Hanukkah songs Morah Iris sang with them!

FYI: Every week we take lots of photos. Many are taken by our little photographers at BE. The kids are taking turns capturing our religious school mornings to share. Last week’s photographers were: Sean, Marina, Sarah, Sophia, Iris and myself!

Have a fantastic week!
